FUNERALS AND MEMORIALS

FUNERALS AND MEMORIALS

when someone has died, there is often very little time and a lot to navigate.

gone. is a sydney-based independent funeral and memorial planning studio.

What We Do

Funerals and Memorials Guide

Gone. manages the full experience of a farewell including funerals, memorials, and celebrations of life across Sydney.

We function as a funeral planner and creative producer: shaping the experience from arrival to departure, engaging and managing every supplier, and leading the entire process from the first conversation through to the day itself.

For full service farewells where a death has recently occurred, we work closely with a funeral director as part of the team we assemble and direct. If you already have one in place, we're happy to work with them. If not, we will recommend and appoint one from our trusted network on your behalf.

Our role may include:

defining the overall direction, tone and feel
designing the structure and flow from arrival to departure
helping shape personal tributes, eulogies and meaningful moments
appointment and briefing of the funeral director where required
recommendation and management of all suppliers
coordination of quotes, bookings and payments on your behalf
on-the-day production and presence to ensure everything unfolds exactly as intended

WHAT A FAREWELL CAN BE

No two farewells we've produced have looked the same.

A farewell can take place almost anywhere a story naturally sits - a light-filled room overlooking the harbour, a private garden at first light, a gallery after hours, the deck of a yacht, a warehouse softened with light and sound, a bush clearing open to the sky, a family home reimagined quietly, or a hall, chapel, or rooftop with personal meaning.

The elements that shape a farewell are equally open. Light and shadow.
Music, soundscapes, or silence.
Flowers, botanicals, or sculptural greenery. Portraits, archival images, subtle moving footage. Objects that tell a story.
Spoken tributes shaped with intention. Rituals drawn from personal values, not tradition or obligation.

Nothing is added without purpose, and nothing theatrical for the sake of spectacle. The tone comes from the person, not from an aesthetic template.

How It Works

We start by understanding the person, the context, and what matters most.

There is nothing to prepare and no decisions to have made before this. We can meet in person or online, and can include family members or close friends if that feels right.

This first conversation has no agenda beyond listening, and from there we shape the overall direction of the farewell - its tone, structure, and flow.
We identify the key moments, define the experience, and outline everything required to bring it together. At this stage we also confirm scope and fees.

Once direction is agreed, we move into full production. Families can be as involved as feels right - contributing to the personal moments, the storytelling, the details that only they would know.

Everything else we take care of.

On the day, a member of the Gone. team is present from start to finish, ensuring every element of the experience unfolds exactly as intended.

who we work with

Gone. works with individuals and families across Sydney who want something different - a farewell as singular as the life it honours.

We are often approached by families who have just experienced a loss and don't know where to start.

We are also approached by people who are thinking ahead - who want to plan their own farewell before the time comes, to spare the people they love from having to make those decisions under pressure.

pre planning here.

We work with families of all kinds, across all cultural backgrounds and belief systems.

We do not bring a religious framework or a default template. We bring a process, a creative sensibility, and the experience to make it real.

For those who want the ending to be as considered of the earth as it is of the person, we offer dedicated guidance on sustainable farewell options - including natural burial and aquamation.

frequently asked questions

Q: What is the difference between a funeral planner and a funeral director?

A: A funeral director is responsible for the care and transport of the person who has died, and for the legal and administrative aspects of a death. A funeral planner - which is what Gone. essentially provides - designs and produces the farewell experience itself. We work with a funeral director as part of the broader team, but our role is focused on what the family and guests will actually experience: the tone, the flow, the storytelling, and every detail of the day.

Q: Do I need to have a funeral director before I come to you?

A: No. If you already have a funeral director in place, we work with them directly. If you don't, we will recommend someone from our trusted network and manage that relationship on your behalf from the start.

Q: Can Gone. help with a memorial rather than a funeral?

A: Yes. Memorials can happen at any time - weeks, months, or even years after a death, and in almost any form. We design and produce memorials as complete standalone experiences, separate from any funeral service that may have already taken place.

Q: What does a bespoke funeral or memorial cost?

A: Full service farewells with Gone. begin from $10,000, which covers our planning, design, and production work. This is separate from third-party costs such as the funeral director, venue, and suppliers, which vary depending on what the farewell involves. Our detailed guide includes full information on fees, what is included, and indicative total expenses.

Q: Where in Sydney do you work?

A: We work across greater Sydney and are open to discussing farewells in other locations where it makes sense to do so.

Q: What if I don't know what I want?

A: That is the most common place to start. You don't need to arrive with ideas, preferences, or decisions made. Our first conversation is simply about the person. Everything else follows from there.

Q: Can I plan my own farewell in advance?

A: Yes. Pre planning is one of the most considered things you can do for the people who love you. We work with individuals at any stage of life who want to make these decisions thoughtfully, on their own terms. Learn more about pre planning here.
